The superconducting symmetry of the heavy fermion uranium-based superconductor UTe$$_2$$ is investigated using low temperature penetration depth measurements. The anisotropic low-energy quasiparticle excitations indicates multiple superconducting components in a chiral complex form. The most consistent is a chiral non-unitary state.

Lower superconducting critical fields $$H_{rm c1}$$ of UTe$$_2$$ have been determined. Orthorhombic UTe$$_2$$ has magnetic easy axis along the $$a$$-axis. We found $$H_{rm c1}$$ perpendicular to $$a$$ showed anomalous enhancement. By comparing with anisotropy of upper critical fields, effect of magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity is suggested.

Various types of radioactive wastes and environments contain organic substances that can stabilize the aqueous complexes with radionuclides and therefore lead to a decrease of sorption. The present study focuses on testing a methodology to quantify sorption reduction factors (SRFs) in the presence of organic ligands for cement systems. Three approaches for the estimation of SRFs; (1) analogy with solubility enhancement factors, (2) radionuclide speciation based on the thermodynamic calculations, and (3) experimental sorption data in ternary systems, were coupled and tested for the representative organic ligands (ISA and EDTA) and selected key radionuclides (actinides). Our approach allows to critically evaluate the dependence of SRFs for various systems on the chosen method of quantification, in accordance with the data availability for a given systems. The reliable SRFs can only be derived from the sorption measurements in ternary systems. SRF often need to be derived in the absence of such direct evidence, and estimations need to be made based on analogies and speciation information. However, such estimates may be subject to substantial uncertainties.

The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) Project has being pursued by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to enhance the reliability of relevant disposal technologies through investigations of the deep geological environment within the host sedimentary formation at Horonobe, northern Hokkaido. The URL Project consists of two major research areas, "Geoscientific Research" and "Research and Development on Geological Disposal Technologies", and proceeds in three overlapping phases, "Phase I: Surface-based investigations", "Phase II: Investigations during tunnel excavation" and "Phase III: Investigations in the underground facilities", over a period of around 20 years. Phase III investigation was started in 2010 fiscal year. The in-situ experiment for performance confirmation of engineered barrier system (EBS experiment) had been prepared from 2013 to 2014 fiscal year at G.L.-350m gallery, and heating by electric heater in simulated overpack had started in January, 2015. One of objectives of the experiment is acquiring data concerned with Thermal-Hydrological-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) coupled behavior. These data will be used in order to confirm the performance of engineered barrier system. This report summarizes the measurement data acquired from the EBS experiment. The period of data acquisition is from December, 2014 to March, 2015. It will be periodically published summarized data of EBS experiment.

Momentum dependence of Mott gap excitations in optimally doped YBa$$_2$$Cu$$_3$$O$$_{7-delta}$$ studied by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Mott gap excitations in the optimally doped high-$$T_{c}$$ superconductor YBa$$_2$$Cu$$_3$$O$$_{7-delta}$$ ($$T_{c}$$ = 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the $$ab$$-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the $$b^{*}$$ direction, while the excitation from the CuO$$_2$$ plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra when different values of the on-site Coulomb energy are assumed. The Mott gap of the CuO chain site is found to be much smaller than that of the CuO$$_2$$ plane site.

We report a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-$$T_{c}$$ superconductor Nd$$_{1.85}$$Ce$$_{0.15}$$CuO$$_4$$. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with $${mathbf q}$$-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

We have studied electronic excitations of hole-doped manganese oxides La$$_{1-x}$$Sr$$_x$$MnO$$_3$$ ($$x=0.2$$ and $$0.4$$) by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at Mn K absorption edge. We observed in the excitation spectra that the Mott gap of La$$_{0.6}$$Sr$$_{0.4}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ was filled by hole-doping. In La$$_{0.8}$$Sr$$_{0.2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$, which shows a metal-insulator transition, we found that temperature dependence of scattering intensity is different between two scattering vectors. It may reflects a anisotropic electronic structure which originates from the orbital degrees of freedom in manganese oxides.

In order to collect technical information for the assessment on future nuclear power reactors and fuel cycle systems in Japan, investigation has been made on the characteristics and performance of future reactor options including reduced moderation water reactors (RMWRs) and their fuel cycle systems since the fiscal year 1998. The subjects of investigation are divided into three categories; breeder reactors and their fuel cycle, alternative to sodium-cooled FBR systems,plutonium recycling, spent fuel reprocessing and waste disposal. This report is a summary of the investigation carried out so far.

Electronic excitations in the hole doped manganese oxides (La$$_{1-x}$$Sr$$_x$$MnO$$_3$$, $$x=0.2$$ and $$0.4$$) have been elucidated by using the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) method. A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the spectral weight energy shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO$$_3$$. On the other hand, the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of $$x=0.2$$ are anisotropic in temperature dependence, which indicates an anisotropy of magnetic interaction and underlying effect of the orbital.

In this article we review essential natures of superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems from a universal point of view. Here we consider materials such as high-$$T_{rm c}$$ cuprates, BEDT-TTF organic superconductors, ruthenate Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$, and heavy fermion superconductors. After the review of experimental results, we explain the formalism to discuss superconducting properties of strongly correlated electron systems based on the Dyson-Gor'kov equations. Then, we introduce theoretical retults on cuprates, organics, ruthenate, and heavy fermion superconductors in this order.

Strongly correlated f- and d-electron systems including heavy Fermion systems and transition metal oxides are important source of exciting new phenomena in condensed matter physics. Recently it has been recognized in more profound way that the orbital degeneracy of the f- and d-electrons plays very important role underlying those exotic phenomena. The idea of the present workshop is to bring active researchers in the field together and to exchange ideas in informal atmosphere. In the workshop many interesting results were presented and stimulating discussions were made as clearly seen by the present report.

Data analysis on worker dose in dismantling of Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) (Contract research)

The data on worker dose in dismantling of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) was analyzed to characterize its features. It was appeared from the study that the collective dose to the workers was 306 man-mSv, in which maximum individual dose was 8.5 mSv, almost all doses were received in the activities for dismantling of reactor internals, the reactor pressure vessel and the biological shield, and that the worker dose distribution was similar to that in the maintenanee of the facilities which was characterized by the hybrid log normal distribution model. Farthermore, it was found that the dismantling activities were categorized into three groups depending on dose rates in workplaces, then contribution factors for radiation exposure in terms of dose rates in different groups were derived based on the analysis. The study would be useful for estimation of worker dose in future decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants in Japan.
